LafargeHolcim wins FICCI Sustainability Game Changer Award 2025
LafargeHolcim Bangladesh PLC (LHB), a leading building materials company, has been honored with the Foreign Investors' Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) Sustainability Game Changer Award 2025, as Runner-up in the Sustainable Operational Excellence category, for its outstanding contribution in sustainable waste management through its Geocycle wing in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is currently grappling with one of the highest rates of urbanization in South Asia, which has led to a rapid and unsustainable increase in waste generation. This crisis is compounded by the fact that an estimated 55% of solid waste in urban areas remains uncollected, exerting immense pressure on landfills which is a severe threat to local ecosystem, underground water quality and public health.
LHB has addressed this critical challenge with an innovative, sustainable solution through its Geocycle facility at its Chhatak Plant in Sunamganj. This state-of-the-art facility, approved by the Department of Environment, safely co-processes waste in its cement kilns which is internationally recognized, environment friendly and scientific process for sustainable waste management.
Commercially launched in 2017, the Geocycle facility currently co-processes approximately 50,000 metric tons of waste annually, including municipal solid waste and industrial waste from the textile, pharmaceutical, Oil & Gas and FMCG sectors. With an annual disposal capacity exceeding 100,000 metric tons, Geocycle plays a vital role in reducing environmental impact, conserving natural resources and fostering a circular economy in Bangladesh.
Iqbal Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer of LHB, said “This recognition from FICCI reflects our unwavering commitment towards the circular economy and environmental stewardship. Geocycle is a cornerstone of our strategy, demonstrating how responsible industrial operations can provide solutions to major national challenges.”
Md. Anisuzzaman, Chief Financial Officer and Tamrin Chowdhury, Deputy Manager, Geocycle, received the award on behalf of LHB from Mr. Lutfey Siddiqi, Special Envoy on International Affairs to the Hon’ble Chief Adviser, at a ceremony held recently.
